Fungal Infections of the Central Nervous System: Clinical,Radiographic and Laboratory Manifestations
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Due to advancements in transplantation, the concomitant use of immunosuppressive therapies, and the pandemic spread of HIV, the incidence of systemic fungal infections, especially lifethreatening central nervous system (CNS) infections, has increased [1]. CNS fungal infections are associated with high mortality and morbidity. Even in immunocompetent hosts, the cure rate for patients receiving antifungal therapy for cryptococcal meningitis is 75% and is only 25% for CNS aspergillosis and mucormycosis [2].

Laboratory diagnosis of fungal infections
Selection of appropriate specimens for culture and microscopic examination is based on the results of clinical and radiographic examination and consideration of the most likely fungal pathogen that may cause such an infection. Specimens should be collected under aseptic conditions or after appropriate cleaning and decontamination of the collection site and rapidly transported to the clinical my...
متن کاملAutoimmune Hemolytic Anemia preceding the Diagnosis of Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma
In this study, a 2.5-year-old boy suffering from a febrile seizure with normal laboratory tests and a history of immune hemolytic anemia was examined. Brain MRI demonstrated some tumors in the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobe that corroborated the pathology results of primary central nervous system lymphoma for the patient. The patient was treated with high- dose of Methotrexate. Our re...
متن کاملIntracranial Fungal Granuloma Mimicking Neoplastic Lesion: Diagnostic Dilemma and Role of Voriconazole as Treatment Strategy
ABSTRACT Fungal infections of the central nervous system (CNS) usually present as subacute meningitis or intracranial space occupying lesion with mass effect on surrounding structures and consequent focal neurological deficits. Intracranial fungal granulomas are often misdiagnosed clinically and radiologically as neoplastic lesions. Biopsy of the lesion is the only reliable technique to estab...
متن کاملLaboratory diagnosis of parasitic and fungal diseases of the central nervous system.
This review is presented to bring attention to those fungal and parasitic organisms that have been associated with central nervous system (CNS) infection and to offer an approach for handling their laboratory diagnosis. Treatment of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to yeild best results on direct smear examination and culture are discussed. Culture procedures and staining methods to be done are gi...
متن کاملA Case Report of Primary Angiitis of the Central Nervous System
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS) is an inflammatory vasculitis with very low frequency and prevalence. It is not clear why the inflammatory process of this disease is limited to cerebrovascular disease without systemic manifestations. A case of primary angiitis of the central nervous system with cerebrovascular manifestations is reported here. C...
